Charity Screening Goes Down A Storm

History was made on Sunday 9th Feb with actor Zack Gottsagen becoming the first person with Down syndrome to present an Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards in Hollywood.

Earlier the same day, in anticipation of this historic milestone, we celebrated Zack's work as an actor by screening The Peanut Butter Falcon, the award winning film in which he made his big screen acting debut last year, alongside Hollywood stars, Shia LeBeouf, Dakota Johnson and Bruce Dern.

Organised in association with PSDS member Ross and his parents Steve and Ainslie, the screening at Clair Hall in Hayward's Heath was a huge success - in spite of Storm Ciara's attempts to cause disruption!

An audience of over 270, including Cllr Alastair McPherson, the Mayor of Hayward's Heath (pictured above with Ross), gathered to watch the film which was very warmly received, along with a special introduction Ross filmed at Crawley College, where he is studying digital media.

Representing PSDS on Sunday, Helen Shiers thanked the audience for showing such enthusiasm for the film and also thanked the sponsors of the screening for their help in making it happen - LCW Consulting Ltd, J & M Running, Advanced Print, Dreamraven and Thyngs, whose digital donation technology was used for the first time by PSDS at the event.

"We are so grateful people braved the stormy conditions to come and join us," Helen said, "and we owe a big vote of thanks to the whole team at Places for People for hosting our screening at Clair Hall. It's been a fabulous team effort, led by Ross and his family! Seeing Ross personally greeting all the audience members on arrival really set the tone for a wonderful afternoon."

As a direct result of the screening, £1,973 has been raised for PSDS so far with donations still coming in via the special QR donation code provided by Thyngs.

Great work Ross! We can't wait to see more of Zack's work too and hope the next time he appears at the Academy Awards it's to receive an Oscar rather than present one!

(many thanks to Adam Frost for the photos!)
